The fabric decides the view.
How much of the yard you keep and how much sun you stop is a choice of weave, made per opening against the way it faces. These are the Phifer fabrics we specify most, with the full range below, and the samples are in the showroom.

Illustrative renders. Fabric names, openness and colors follow Phifer’s published SunTex and No-See-Ums ranges; color on screen is approximate. Samples are in the Blue Note A/V showroom in Farmers Branch.
Phifer SunTex 95 and 97
The fabric for motorized screens. A full basketweave of vinyl-coated polyester, thinner and lighter than the original SunTex so it rolls tightly into the housing. SunTex 97 is the closer weave, for glare and daytime privacy; SunTex 95 keeps more of the view.
- Openness
- About 3 percent (97) and 5 percent (95)
- Sun blocked
- About 97 and 95 percent
- Used in
- Motorized screens

Phifer SunTex 80 and 90
The heavier original SunTex weave, made for framed panels and screen doors rather than rollers. It stops most of the sun's heat before it reaches the patio or the glass behind it, and SunTex 80 is the most open of the sun fabrics, so it keeps the most view.
- Openness
- About 20 percent (80) and 10 percent (90)
- Sun blocked
- About 80 and 90 percent
- Used in
- Fixed panels and screen doors

Phifer No-See-Ums
A tight 20 by 20 fiberglass weave that stops gnats, sand flies and no-see-ums, the insects ordinary screen lets through, and still keeps the breeze and the view. Vinyl-coated glass yarn, so it resists rust and corrosion and will not burn.
- Weave
- 20 by 20 fiberglass
- Made for
- Insects, not sun
- Used in
- Screen doors, fixed panels and pool enclosures

Clear vinyl
For a patio used through the winter. A clear vinyl window set in a fabric border, rolled into the same housing and run in the same zipper track as a sun screen, so it keeps out wind, rain and cold while the view stays open. Often paired with a sun screen on the same opening.
- View
- Clear, through the window
- Made for
- Wind, rain and cold
- Used in
- Motorized screens, up to 16 by 12 feet
These are the fabrics we specify most, not the limit.
We order every fabric the manufacturer offers, its own house fabrics included, and bring the samples to the visit. The numbers are the share of sun each weave stops, and every color listed is one the manufacturer stocks. Swatches are the fabric makers’ own photographs. Openness and sun-blocking figures are Phifer’s published approximations. Color on a screen is never quite the fabric in daylight, which is why the samples matter.

Guide · Fabrics · Phifer SunTex & No-See-UmsWhich Fabric for Your Patio Screens
The fabric decides how much of the yard you keep and how much sun you stop. Here is how to choose the weave for each opening — by which way it faces, and whether it is fighting sun, insects or winter.
Guide · Fixed Panels · Choosing the InfillSunTex, Insect Screen, Glass, or Polycarbonate
A fixed screen panel is a frame and an infill, and the infill is the real choice. Sun fabric, insect mesh, glass, or polycarbonate — each closes an opening a different way. Here is how we pick the one for each side of a patio.
Guide · Motorized Screens · Dallas–Fort WorthThe Patio, Usable in August
A Dallas patio sits empty from June to September for three reasons — the afternoon sun, the insects, and the wind. Exterior screens answer all three, then come up out of sight when the evening turns pleasant.
Start with the free call.
Fifteen minutes tells us both whether screens are the right answer for the patio, and roughly what they involve. No payment, no obligation.
